El conejo en la luna

I was face-up on the shore of the Caribbean
We talked so long the phone warmed my cheek
as the moon turned to rust

You asked if I saw the rabbit
I squinted at the sky

Lunar craters reassembled
and I was featherless Quetzalcoatl
ordinary
human
and so very hungry
Basaltic plains shifted
blooming into a swollen belly
your hands rubbing my feet on the couch
You were putting our daughter to bed
inside the Rheita Valley
calling her the same tender names
you whispered to me
‍ ‍Mi vida
‍ ‍Mi cielo
‍ ‍Mi noche llena de estrellas
We danced together in the lava flows
the child pulling us towards her like low tide
your face the Sea of Tranquility beside starlight
Nails went unbitten
A pot simmered on the stove
Crows' feet framed my eyes
The fridge was always full

Palm trees rustled
and I returned to Earth
238,855 miles beneath
the shadows of potential futures
I know I’ll never see

I was face-up on the shore of the Caribbean
trying to kiss the sky
