The Pond

where whimsy, magic, and craft come for a swim

So what is Silly Goose Press?

Silly Goose Press is an online literary magazine that has an obsession with craft-forward whimsy. We look for the magic in the mundane and the mundane in the magical.

So…what does that mean?

We care about high quality writing that considers the elements of craft (diction, syntax, plot, characterization, etc.), and we want to work with writers that recognize that the work they do is an art form. Whimsy, magic, and heart tie it all together.

Now more than ever, we believe in radical joy, and we also believe in subverting the expectation that happy, joyous, love-ful writing is inherently less good than the serious work often favored by the literary world. Silly Goose Press aims to showoff the best, brightest, silliest work in the contemporary literary scene and create space for those of us that better process the world around us through rose colored glasses.

SGP’s top priority is caring for and cultivating our community of writers and artists. We strive to form meaningful connections with each of our contributors and love to be their biggest cheerleaders (we honk pretty loud!) as time goes on. Check out our map featuring the home-nests of our writers—they’ve all flown in from so far!

The Flock

Who???

Hi—Lexi, Parker, Rhiannon, and Eric here, aka The Varsity Flock and founders of Silly Goose Press! We’re a group of friends (and writers) that met at our undergrad, University of Redlands—och tamale, Bulldogs! As we developed a deep love of our craft through our creative writing classes, we also developed a deep love for one another. Rhiannon founded a Creative Writing Society and Lexi joined the board, Eric and Parker joined the club, and then the board, and the rest was history. Before we knew it, we were living together, writing together, and growing together.

After graduating from undergrad, we flew our separate ways. Geographically, that is. We honked at one another constantly despite the distance. After a few years, a few MFAs, and a few lit mag rejections (and acceptances!), we decided that we wanted to carve our a space for the work we wanted to see more of in the world.

One year in, we realized that there seemed to be a pretty big call for whimsy in the literary world, and we had to call in some reinforcements. Enter: Ian, Annelise, and Julia—our JV Flock! Let’s just say this pond would house a lot more weeds without them.

Our mission, our website, our publications, and everything we are runs on friendship, community, and a love for what we all do best: Be Silly and Write, Write, Write. We are so glad you’re here!
