Welcome to

Silly Goose Salons*

*a very serious literary community

Silly Goose Press has always been a home for what we call craft-forward whimsy, and while we’re no strangers to describing what exactly we’re looking for in terms of editing the mag, we think it’s time we dive deeper into what craft-forward anything really means. Our new event series, Silly Goose Salons, focuses our intentions less on the product and more on the process, allowing us to uncover together how we can refocus our writing, examine the literary devices at our disposal, improve our craft, and up our whimsy, too, if all goes to plan!

FAQ

  • In the name of transparency, let’s take a peak behind our feathered curtain. Silly Goose Press was founded by four young writers with (when we started) a collective handful of publications. As the magazine has grown, the editors’ individual writing careers have grown, too, but not enough that any of us have a book deal, or an agent, or a pub in The Paris Review. We’re just as hungry as you are for any information and connection we can get that will help us crawl through the slush pile and make our way to the top. We figure if we’re going to do the work of collecting gems, we might as well bring you all along for the ride.

  • We’ll host monthly(ish) ONLINE events with incredible writers, agents, editors, and other industry professionals to prove that while the writing life can (and should) be whimsical, it’s not magic. Everything we writers do is based on hard-earned skill and learned talents that make success look easy — but we know the more seamless success appears, the harder it is to achieve. During Silly Goose Salons events, we’ll talk honestly about logistics and experiences, and foster community spaces that support writers at all stages of their careers.

All events (aside from our Community-Building event at AWP each year) will take place via Zoom. Our events take place (roughly) every third Saturday of the month. These events come in two exciting varieties:

    • Community-Building events promote literary friendship! These include Readings, where you can share the work you’re excited about, Write-Ins, where the flock leads you through some writing exercises and brainstorming seshes, and our tried-and-true Speed Dating events, where you can meet your new best literary friend, or maybe your writing soulmate ;)

    • Panels & Workshops are what they say on the tin! In Panels, we bring in industry professionals and ask them to talk about their work, with a chance for Q&As with you all. Our workshops are run by yours truly (the editors of SGP) for now *wink wink* and will provide you with an in-depth look at the pieces you submit.

  • FRIEND O’ THE FLOCK:
    $33 per year

    • Friends o' the Flock will enjoy access to all of our Community-Building events, including Readings, Speed Dating, and Write-Ins!

    • We’ll host at least five of these events per year.

    THE GAGGLE:
    $55 per year

    • Members of The Gaggle will enjoy access to all of our Panels & Workshops. Panels will be moderated by The Flock and showcase inspiring industry professionals; workshops will be led by The Flock (and hopefully include a special guest or two)!

    • We’ll host two workshops and two panels per year. Additional materials (such as books written by our lovely panelists) will be an optional add on.

    MOTHER GEESE:
    $77 per year

    • Our Mother Geese will enjoy access to ALL online Silly Goose Salon events including Community-Building events and Panels & Workshops.

    • Members will have access to all 10+ of our very serious literary events per year, and additional materials (such as books written by panelists) will be an optional add on.

    PATRON OF THE POND:
    $111 per year

    • Patrons of the Pond are our Top-Tier members, and will enjoy a plethora of fun events and goodies (in addition to knowing that they are supporting us in a Big Way™). Members will get access to ALL online events, including Community-Building events and Panels & Workshops, receive additional materials as part of their membership, and receive a quarterly care package of Silly Goose Press goodies/merch/love letters.

    • Our events take place 10+ times per year, and all additional materials will be mailed to members, at no additional cost.

  • We the Flock absolutely adore the community we’ve built and the work we do here at SGP, but the reality is we’re tossing some pretty shiny pennies into this pond. We aim to never charge reading fees (besides offering expedited response times!), but we’d really like to find a way to pay our contributors! Pay our staff! And maybe even create some sort of goosey scholarship someday to help future writers! None of that can happen unless we develop a business model that sets SGP up for some long-term, money-making success. By joining Silly Goose Salons, you’ll not only be getting access to new knowledge and community, you’ll also be helping our magazine reach the heights we know we’re capable of. We’ve got big dreams, geese, and this is just the beginning!

Silly Goose Salons is new to us and we expect to make some edits and revisions as we kick off. But, above all, we want this to be a safe and productive space for our literary friends that actually does the work to serve our community. That means sometimes we’ll be updating dates and times as we approach events to accommodate our feathered folks.

Got a question? You know we love to hear you honk our way. Got an idea? We love those, too! We hope to see you ‘round the pond soon.
