Irresistible Notion

on mobile? turn phone sideways!

I’ve parked the car like this a bunch of times before
but this time the sun was setting,
so the light struck you in a certain way,
cast a stunning orange over your beautiful face.

You know it’s my favourite colour and I’d have loved
to tell you that it brought out every shade of red in your hair,
just as I’d love to tell you how infatuated I am with you;
if I did, if I told you, if it finally burst out,

your husband wouldn’t want to be friends with me,
he’d probably tell my wife, there’s no way
we could work together anymore.
So my heart keeps burning in my chest.

As you spoke, I had the most clichéd thought
I should write a poem about this
And though the thought made me cringe
because what poet in history

hasn't watched the reflection of the setting sun
pass over the face of their unrequited crush
and felt the urge to note every detail on paper?
Here we are; because I couldn't resist

Iris Taylor

Iris Taylor (she/her) has been writing poetry forever but only recently decided that life is too short not to share it with someone! She has a very serious job and so tries to balance it out by being as un-serious as possible the rest of the time.
